Welcome to The Impact of Loneliness and Social Isolation on Older People, a European conference dedicated to addressing one of the most significant social and public health challenges affecting our ageing population.
Across Europe, demographic change is transforming our societies. Increased life expectancy is a remarkable achievement, yet many older Europeans experience shrinking social networks due to retirement, bereavement, mobility challenges, or the migration of family members. Loneliness is not simply a personal feeling; it is increasingly recognised as a serious risk factor for physical and mental health. Social isolation can reduce opportunities for participation, limit access to services, and weaken the sense of belonging that is essential for a dignified and fulfilling later life.
Taking place in Cyprus, this event brings together older citizens, researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, community organisations, and advocates from across Europe to engage in meaningful dialogue and reflection on how loneliness and social isolation affect the lives, health, and wellbeing of older people. Established in 2010, the Summer Academy has been held annually as a platform for advancing the wellbeing of older people, and in 2026 it will convene for the 17th time, continuing its longstanding commitment to shared learning and collaborative action.
Over the course of three days, experts, distinguished speakers, and representatives of seniors’ organisations from across Europe will come together to examine and discuss “The Impact of Loneliness and Social Isolation on Older People” from multiple perspectives. Through interdisciplinary exchange and shared experience, participants will explore the social, psychological, health, and policy dimensions of this critical issue, with the aim of identifying meaningful and sustainable responses.
This conference aims to share knowledge, research, and promising practices from across European countries while placing the lived experiences of older citizens at the centre of the conversation. By fostering cooperation between communities, organisations, and decision-makers, we seek to strengthen inclusive approaches that promote connection, active ageing, and social participation.
Set against the cultural richness and hospitality of Cyprus, our gathering reflects a shared European commitment to solidarity, respect, and social inclusion. We warmly invite you to be part of this important conversation and to contribute to shaping practical and compassionate solutions that ensure older people across Europe remain connected, valued, and empowered members of society.
